Details: Our
village, the Siva Maleviziou, hung around by olives and vines it is
found in distance of 18 kilometres from the city of Heraklion. Its
residents, few but conscientious, have much to tell about their
village. You can see from a distance the plain from sides that are
found above in the Central Road Axis that connects the Heraklion with
the South department of island. The visitor who will follow this way,
will find in the right side of the village the little church of Saint
Paraskeyh, which history is connected with the history and the culture
of Crete. The conquerors that passed from the island left the
marks of destruction in its murals that are dated back to the 12th
century. Up to today there are 300 roughly residents that deal with the
agriculture. The village has big history and took its name from a
Turkish captain, Silva, who lived years ago in our current cemetery.
The village however was renamed Siva. The village is found in one from
the lower palisades of the Psilorith's mountain. From the Eastern side
the village has an outstanding view and also just below the village
there are found rich olive groves and vineyards. Further in the
proximity of the church of Saint Friday are found the taps of the
village that were built in the 14th century. If someone wants to visit
Siva he will see a lot of traditional houses that have the same pattern
of building.
All the traditional houses have been built almost at the same size but
internally they have a lot of differences, we could say that at that
time there was a variety of ideas going around, that are nowadays being
seen through the inside structure of the houses. These traditional
buildings add a certain beauty to the village in comparison with the
newly built houses. Even now when families decide to live in the
village they build their houses at some way traditionally. Apart from
what we have already mentioned there is also another equally important
and interesting characteristic of our village and this is its school
which was built 80 years ago. In front of the school there is a tree
that is almost 250 years old. Apart from the church of Saint Paraskeuh
there are also other churches that are also significant and important,
with the difference that these are not that old. These churches are:
Saint Nicholas, the Saint George, Saint John and the church of Christ.
The village was previously found in a location named ''MARKO'' but
unfortunately in that region spread a devastating illness the so-called
Plague and thus the residents that had remained there were forced to be
transported more Eastern and thus was the village of Siva was created.
Finally it should be reported that Siva is the older village of the
region between the other villages such as Venerato, Augeniki, Dafnes
and Kerasia.
