The English historian Alfred Zimmern believes that the olive tree is a greek native that spread initially to the greek colonies in southern Italy and then proliferated over the entire Mediterranean.
For the Greeks the oil was always considered as a gift from the gods. Texts and findings testify to its economic value. Nor was olive oil used solely as a food.
It had a great many uses, covering the entire spectrum of economic and social activity, which was why Homer called it liquid gold. Some of its uses were the following: in cleaning, in making perfumes, in beauty care, in medicine and in lighting.
Because of these various uses, olive oil was a product with great commercial value: Plutarch reports that Solon the law-giver permitted the Athenians to export only oil. In recent decades the medicinal value of pure olive oil has once again come to the foreground, and modern medicine had a chance to admire the scientific expertise of ancient medical practices.
Research has demonstrated that, in addition to its nutritional value, olive oil is an invaluable factor for general maintenance of the human organism, and an effective means in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Because of the monounsaturated oleic acid it contains, controls the cholesterol in the blood by improving the level of the lipoprotein HDL, and as a result the metabolism of cholesterol, which is a major factor in heart disease.
In addition, the physical properties of olive oil make it the most suitable edible oil, easily absorbed by the body, with beneficial effects on the stomach.
There are countless factors contributing to the special qualities of greek olive oil. Special climate and soil conditions, the purifying and vivifying properties of the greek sun, harvesting at the precise moment when the olives are most suitable for pressing, gathering the olives right from the tree before they fall to the ground and deteriorate and processing them as soon as they are harvested without any chemical additives whatsoever. All these factors together result in pure olive oil with very fine qualities, considered by many as the best in the entire world. The conditions for growing olives and the methods of producing olive oil have changed very little over the years. Olive oil is produced in special facilities called liotrivia or oil presses. Greece is the country with the highest per capita consumption of olive oil in the world. The rest of the green olive oil it is exported and it is in high demand on markets abroad. On the basis of official statistics, virgin olive oil (a natural product, full-flavoured, with a pleasant aroma and unrivalled nutritional properties) marked the greatest rate of increase in exports in the period 1990-1998, ranging in bulk terms at around 400,000 tons of olive oil annually production, making Greece the 3rd largest producer in the world.

Everybody knows about the great quality and flavour of Cretan olive oil.

Its therapeutic and beneficial attributes have been known and respected for thousands of years. Studies of today's scientific community have recognized the Cretan diet as one of the healthiest worldwide.

The beneficial health effects of Crete olive oil are due to both its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and its high content of antioxidative substances. Studies have shown that olive oil offers protection against heart disease by controlling LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels while raising HDL (the "good" cholesterol) levels. Many times Lute is used as a soloistic instrument. ii.Lira is known in the Hellenic place since 9th century, it is unknown when it was starting it's use in Crete. iii.The violin used at west and east countys. Especially in east Crete, Efstratios Kalogeridis helped to it's propagation. iv.The Mantolin is used in Center and East Crete rarely as an instrument of melody and accompanies lyra and violin. Guitars are used at the same places only as a companion for violin. v.Bulgari use is limited in Crete. At the older times it was a common melody instrument. Also, it accompanies lyra. Wind: vi.The flute has cut the place where the player blows and it is closed with piro. On the cylinder, where the piros ends, there are six holes which are used for the melody. vii.Mantura has 4 - 6 holes and it is made in different sizes. A variant of mantoura is diplomantoura. viii.Askomantountoura is usually played at open air place, stands alone or accompanies lute. This instrument is well known in the old times but today it is going to be disappeared. Percussion: ix.The Ntaoulaki about a little tabor which is played with two sticks, the ntaouloksila. In the old times it was well known at east Crete. Today the ntaoulaki has been dissapeared.

Ο αρχαιολογικός χώρος των Μαλίων βρίσκεται 3 χιλιόμετρα ανατολικά της ομώνυμης κωμόπολης. Στον χώρο αυτό υπήρχε μια σημαντική πόλη με ανάκτορο, ανάλογο με το μέγεθος με εκείνα της Κνωσού και της Φαιστού αλλά λιγότερο επιβλητικό. Το αρχαίο όνομα της πόλης δεν είναι γνωστό ενώ το σημερινό Μάλια προέρχεται από τη λέξη Ομαλία που υποδηλώνει την ομαλότητα του εδάφους. . Στο ανάκτορο των Μαλίων βασίλεψε ο Σαρπηδόνας, αδελφός του Μίνωα και του Ροδάμανθυ. Η πόλη έκοβε δικά της νομίσματα πάνω στα οποία από τη μια πλευρά απεικονιζόταν το κεφάλι της Αθηνάς και από τη άλλη δύο δελφίνια. Απο τα πιο σημαντικά ευρήματα που έχουν βρεθεί είναι το χρυσό κόσμημα με τις δύο μέλισσες . Το πρώτο ανάκτορο κτίστηκε γύρω στο 1900 π.Χ και είχε έκταση 8.800 τετραγωνικά μέτρα. Το 1700 π.Χ καταστράφηκε και κτίζεται νέο που κι αυτό με τη σειρά του θα καταστραφεί γύρω στα 1450 π.Χ. Το ανάκτορο είναι διώροφο έχει μια κεντρική αυλή με μακρόστενο σχήμα. Έχει επίσης τέσσερις πτέρυγες και πέντε εισόδους. Το σπουδαιότερο τμήμα του ανακτόρου είναι η δυτική του πλευρά η οποία είναι και η μεγαλύτερη. Στο ανάκτορο υπήρχαν, όπως και στα ανάκτορα της Κνωσού και της Φαιστού, αποθήκες σε κυκλικό σχήμα στις οποίες βρέθηκαν πολλά αγγεία και πιθάρια, βασιλικά δωμάτια, εργαστήρια που επεξεργαζόταν χαλκό, ελεφαντοκόκαλο κ.α., αίθουσα όπλων στην οποία βρέθηκε το περίφημο βασιλικό σκήπτρο, βωμό ο οποίος βρισκόταν στην κεντρική αυλή του ανακτόρου. Από την βόρεια πύλη του ανακτόρου υπήρχε δρόμος που οδηγούσε σε ένα μικρό όρμο τον οποίο οι μινωίτες τον χρησιμοποιούσαν για λιμάνι. Γύρω από το ανάκτορο υπήρχαν διάφορες συνοικίες που συμπλήρωναν την μινωική πόλη.

After some eight kilometres we turn off this road and head down to the left, towards the coastal village of Agia Pelagia, a modern tourist village which stretches along the shores of an attractive sheltered bay where the northerly winds of summer do not penetrate.
A long beach with enticing yellow sand - which becomes coarser and white in some places - and little white pebbles accounts for the area's importance as a resort.
Agia Pelagia and the little cove of Lygaria which lies about one kilometre away constitute a most attractive unit.
Agia Pelagia takes its name from the church of St Pelagia which stood about 1 km. to the west of the bay and was a dependency of the Savvathianon Convent.
On the northern shore of the bay is a cave known as 'Evresi' ('finding-place'), and it is said that an icon of the saint was discovered there. This, according to the archaeologists, was the site of ancient Apollonia.
At the spot known as Kladotos, recent digs have yielded both Minoan and Hellenistic finds.
Chamber tombs of the Late Minoan period, hewn out of the rock, have also come to light.
However, the main find was the Prytaneion, headquarters of the elders of the town, which was built in the 4th century BC and destroyed in the 2nd century.
Houses have also been disovered, together with a pottery workshop.
We return to the crossroads. To the left, is the coastal village of Linoperamata. We take the old national road to the right, and after passing through the seaside tourist resort of Ammoudara, reach Herakleio.
